Garage Flooring

The ideal floor for a home garage is one that is skid proof, easy to clean, impervious to oil or grease spills, and has a high resistance to impact. Many homeowners are converting at least part of their garage into a workshop or home gym and some even choose to completely renovate the area to turn it into a home office, extra bedroom - or in accordance with current trends - a ‘man cave’. Depending on the intended use of the space, different flooring options exist which can be considered.

What Types of Flooring Work Well for Garages?

If the garage is to be restricted to traditional use (vehicle parking, storage, workshop), an epoxy or rubber floor may be the best options. Epoxy offers an easy to clean, durable surface across the entire floor, while rubber is impact resistant and environmentally friendly (a 24” rubber tile square can recycle the rubber from up to 2 ½ tires). Rubber flooring is great for an exercise/workout area as well, and has the advantage of letting you choose to cover only a portion of the floor. If the garage is being transformed into an extension of the home’s living space, a sub-floor may be installed and resilient sheet flooring in a variety of styles laid down.

Carpet is generally not the wisest choice for a garage, unless a complete renovation and modification is being done to turn the space into a regular room with insulation, a regular floor and ceiling, and humidity control. Likewise, hardwoods will not do well in an area where excessive humidity or chance of moisture seep is a possibility. Tile is a possibility, but requires a level surface and no moisture beneath.

Things to Consider When Purchasing Garage Flooring

Preparing your existing garage floor for new flooring will require a through cleaning and degreasing if epoxy or rubber is to be applied directly over the concrete, or a sub floor may be built to support other types of floor material. The flooring you select for your garage should reflect the purpose for which it will be used, and if flooding is a concern steps should be taken to resolve the issue before investing in a new garage floor. Ideal Floor offers a wide variety of choices for all flooring installations, including garage appropriate options in a wide range of thicknesses, textures and colors.
