Epoxy

Epoxy flooring is a poured flooring application commonly used over concrete or plywood to provide a level, waterproof, finished appearance. Epoxy flooring may contain quartz sand, mortar or gravel to improve durability or provide traction. The epoxy may come in solid colors or be multicolored, and for DIY use is generally sold in small batches consisting of two parts which must be mixed to activate the hardening process. Epoxy is generally self leveling, making it a good choice for use on uneven floors or those with cracks or small holes that need to be patched.

Uses for Commercial Epoxy

Commercially, epoxy flooring is used in warehouses, car repair shops, showrooms, industrial kitchens, locker rooms, public bathrooms, vet offices, restaurants and pools. It also often used in schools as a non-skid flooring option for halls, cafeterias, locker rooms, laboratories and dorms.

Advantages of Commercial Epoxy Flooring

Epoxy can be pricey, but if applied properly can last for extended periods of time. Advantages of epoxy flooring include protecting existing concrete from wear, deterioration or chemical corrosion; reducing wear to machinery such as forklifts and other warehouse transport equipment; and providing ‘corner-free’ flooring in places where hygiene is an issue and ease of cleaning is a plus. Epoxy flooring is fire resistant, impact resistant, chemical resistant and waterproof, and allows for a skid-free surface to be maintained under almost any conditions.

Things to Consider When Purchasing Commercial Epoxy

When applying epoxy based flooring, the two key requirements are an absolutely clean, dry and grease free surface, and a steady temperature. Heat and humidity can cause bubbling and craters with razor sharp edges to form, and a dirty foundation will cause epoxy to lift away instead of adhering properly. Applied correctly, however, epoxy flooring is one of the most durable flooring options available.
