The ideal floor for a bathroom will be durable, resistant to water spills and easy to clean. Bathrooms in new homes are larger than ever, and in remodeling situations are often earmarked as one of the top two places to invest for increased equity. The type of house foundation (and condition of the existing floor, if any) will have a significant impact on which flooring choices can be considered, and the homeowner’s personal preference and decorating plans must also be taken into account.
Ceramic tile is hands down one of the best options for bathroom floors; installed correctly it will last almost indefinitely and is nearly impervious to water spillage. Tile is also a good choice from the decorating standpoint - the theme can be carried through to the shower or tub surround as well as any counter space or backsplash around the sink area or toilet. Textured tile helps provide traction, and properly sealed grout is easy to clean. Linoleum is another good choice, especially for homes built to be ‘green’ - it is environmentally friendly, long lasting, and (if sealed correctly) is fairly waterproof.
Poor choices for a bathroom floor include vinyl and carpet. Vinyl is more susceptible to water damage due to the chance of water seeping underneath in case of spillage. Carpet is also liable to be ruined if a tub or toilet overflows, and is also vulnerable to staining. Hardwood is sometimes used (particularly if the entire house is floored in wood) but like carpet and vinyl can be severely damaged by water and requires a heavy duty sealant and waterproofing around the perimeter.
If the house has a solid slab foundation, tile can be laid directly over cleaned and prepped concrete. Homes with a pier and beam foundation or second story installations will need an underlayment applied before tile; cement backer board is recommended.
